Matthew's Galleries

Matthew’s Galleries was opened by its current owner and director, Matthew W. Gerber, fourty years ago in the New Jersey suburbs of New York City. The gallery’s specialty has always been quality American paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries, with some European selections. In 1987 Mr. Gerber moved his family and the business three thousand miles across the country to Lake Oswego, Oregon, just outside of Portland. The gallery now emphasizes paintings by Oregon and California regionalists of the same period, and offers the largest and finest selection of such work in the Northwest. In addition, there are always selections of American paintings in general, and some European art of the same time frame.

The gallery presents two live art auctions each year which include paintings, watercolors and prints. Our spring and autumn auctions draw a broad national following which result in telephone and absentee bidding for those that can’t attend. Each auction is fully illustrated and described on our website and on AskArt. Matthew’s Galleries holds more than fifty national auction record prices on both Northwest, California, and other American artists.

In addition to maintaining the highest degree of scholarship and business integrity, Matthew’s Galleries promotes the preservation and research of Oregon’s artistic heritage. A periodic newsletter is published, Gallery Notes, which keeps clients and interested parties informed of recent acquisitions, and includes valued information to novice and advanced collectors alike. We are always seeking to purchase or consign artwork for the gallery and our art auctions. Services include fine art appraisals, consultation, painting and frame restoration. The gallery, open Monday to Friday 11am to 5:30pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm, exhibits more than 200 paintings at any given time, with fresh inventory every week.
